I have a 6 month old foal has poor coat quality, pot bellied and a slight cough. He was shipped to Michigan from Florida. He had a snotty nose so we ( my vet and I )treated him with SMZ'z. I held off on worming because I didn't want to stress his system. He didn't get any better or worse after SMZ's so the vet prescribed Ecenex. He is doing better now. I checked his worming records and he was born June 21 and given 3 days of anthelcide September 8-11 the Ivomec October 3 and 31.

I gave him 1 single dose of Safe Guard 2 weeks ago.

What should I do next?

Hello Linda,
You need to follow your veterinarians recommendations who can examine this foal. From the information I have I think it is time to give him a dose of ivermectin. There is a good chance the respiratory problems are secondary to the round worm larvae that like to migrate through the lungs. The Safe Guard will not kill these migrating larvae but should have cleared the bowel, even it temporarily, of the adults that might have caused a blockage.

I know you have been following Susan's recent tragedy so if you wanted to take more step of safety you could repeat the Safe Guard again and follow it in a week with ivermectin.
