hi everyone,
i need advice for a happy occasion...bringing my new horse home (a 16.1h 11 year old dark bay TB gelding - he got a 'truly sound' 'remarkably clean' prepurchase seal of approval today, hooray!)! i want to know how best to make him feel really comfortable on his first day in his new barn next weekend. he is only travelling 50 miles, no climate change or anything...i am just wanting to help him settle in.
any tips, tricks, recipes, advice? i'm looking for anything from the practical to the frilly...thanks in advance!
xx

Ask if you can buy or have either the food pan or water bucket that was in his stall. The odor is familiar to them.

Ask if you can have or buy a couple of bales of the hay he has been getting. We have always been advised to switch over hays slowly the same as you would if changing a pellet or grain. This is true even if you are giving the same type hay-if it is not from the same source, then take the precaution.

Observations of horses brought to our place over the last four years have left us all with the same conclusion-let them just "chill out" for at least a week or even two while they get accustomed to the new people, routines, horses etc.

thank you liza for your help. he is coming home tomorrow and i have a bucket he's familiar with and the same kind of hay, if not one of their bales. i am so excited, i have been out at the barn since i left work just tinkering around, rearranging the shavings.
big day for me and Kurgan tomorrow.
thanks for your advice!
