  Discussion on Manure eating again!

I notice my pony eating my gelding's manure. He goes over to it right after my gelding has gone starts snorting at it and paws some then starts to eat I never let him be to see if he would then do his own manure pile on top and maybe only one bite is all he needs-i was thinking perhaps he does this as a marking thing. He is the top dog of the two.

I can't fiquire why he would have problems with protien-He gets 10% sweet feed (handfulls 2xa day)but his hay is very green and not stemmy. Is this manure eating thing part of marking or do i need to add more protien-he has left his hay to go do this and the two of them eat 3/4 of a bale of hay aday together (we have 50 lb bales)

It is possible he just likes it. It is also possible that the hay looks better than it is but upping the percent protein in a couple of handfuls of feed every day is not likely to correct this if it is low. Do you have a trace mineral block and free choice water available also? If your hay and your horses look great and you are meeting all the other needs, see Nutrition Overview, I think I would quit worrying and quit kissing the pony.

I may just have my hay tested as they must eat hay year round. They have lots of water and a nice mineral salt block-the gelding needs his teeth done perhaps his manure has "left overs" in it (yuck!) I think i'll stick to kissing his neck!
Thanks Dr. O.
