Discussion on Liver flukes in horses?
Author Message

Posted on Tuesday, Nov 13, 2001 - 12:50 pm:

I am considering moving my horse to a pasture with a stream in it. The area has been used by cattle and the lady leasing the pasture told me that the area was known to have liver flukes, and horses that lived in this pasture would need to be wormed for liver flukes. what I would like to know is:

(1) how dangerous are liver flukes to horses? (My horse is a young one, 2 years old.) apparently they are very dangerous for sheep but encyst in cattle.

(2) Do you need to worm horses for liver flukes and if so what products are effective? the research I have done says that Clorsalon (Curatrem) and albendazole (Valbazen) are used in cattle and are the only effective medications for flukes. Clorsalon is available for cattle in the "Ivomec Plus" product (which as the name suggests, also contains ivermectin.) I have been able to find no information if these products are safe for use in horses or what the dosages should be.

THANKS!
