Hello Dr O:
Ten weeks ago we acquired a 2yo standardbred to train in preparation to race. The history; another trainer broke/trained him as a yearling and qualified him in the spring, however, due to sickness (respiratory) he continued to be trained but never raced. After a month turn-out he was given to us.

After 6 wks. of training down he 'washed out' - (excessive sweat), Dx: scoped; infection, soft palate 20% swollen Tx: enrofloxacin/ventipulmin/ DMSO. Two weeks later Dx: re-scope/bloodwork Tx: Baytril. Work on anemia (RBC 7.9 Hemo 12.1 Hematocrit 32.7) Don't worry (for now) about differential (neutrophils 47 lymphocytes 51 eosinophils 2)

Ten days later; Dx: re-scope; mucus from lungs post viral small airway inflammation. Tx: Tilade/Serevent/Ventipulmin/Sputolycin. Turn out 1 wk/Lightly jog second week.

The colt eats well,(sweet feed/hay/grass) temp. always @ 100F, no nasal discharge, but coughs the odd time when jogged yet sweats excessively (chest)when trained. This morning the vet is once again re-scoping after he's trained. Salt is provided free choice in his stall (block), also electrolyte powder in feed prior to training schedule. Question: would you reccommend FE test? Is it possible that the respiratory infection he had in the spring still persists? I would appreciate your input and reccommendations of other factors we may have missed. Thank you

Nancy Brown

Hello Nancy,
I am sorry what is the FE test?

Concerning the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lower respiratory disease the article associated with this forum is pretty complete over your next best step. Some flus in young horses do require months to recover but I do not know if this is what is wrong with your horse.
