  Discussion on Cleaning eyes

I have a 3yro, bald face paint filly that I just purchased recently. Her eyes have a discharge from them. Several people have told me that it was nothing abnormal and just to keep them wiped off. The problem is that straight water on a cloth is not getting the job done completely. I have tried using baby wipes, which has helped, but not well enough. Can I please get some input on what to use to keep her eyes (and white haired area around it) clean.

Thank you
Nicole

Hello Nicole,
While common, the chronic tearing is indicative of a problem. Horses with a lot of white around the eyes are abnormally sensitive to sunlight. The result is irritation to the conjunctiva.

Without some effort at protection now this problem worsens as the horse ages. In during the day and out at night is best but there are other things to check for and other things you can do, for more see Equine Diseases: Eye Diseases: Inflammed, Tearing, and Swollen

More to your immediate problem. You might check with your local professional dog groomers. Poodles suffer from this tear staining problem and special product are made to bleach it out.
