Dr. O, My retrained Standardbred has a fused left hock and a right hock which is partially fused. When he was on the track he had been given a cortisone hock injection in his left hock and he had continued to race. This seems to have caused the complete fusion of the hock without too much pain. I now have this 8 year old on Legend. My question, if the right hock is semi fused and it obviously is sore at times for him, would it not be best to inject this hock also to complete the fusion with less pain? Thanks for your input.

Regarding: Hock fusion and Bone Spavin.
Regarding HOCK FUSION, please refer me more detailed or scientific study on hock fusion. I am interested in how the bones of the hock articulate with each other before, during, and after hock fusion.
Regarding BONE SPAVIN, please refer me the latest information on treatment. My 12-year-old QH gelding is sadly lame on both rear hocks. Radiograph of two years ago confirms spavin in both hocks. Each year he is more lame, can barely trot now, much less lope. I am considering putting this gelding down unless there is another treatment available (besides joint injection and bute paste). I look forward to your reply. --Christy
