  Discussion on Spinal Process Fractures

Posted on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 11:40 pm:

A mare in my barn flipped over last week. She was x-rayed today and 7 processes in the withers were found to be fractured, some were not properly aligned anymore. She is to be stall rested for 6 months and x-rayed again in 3 months. My question is this, with such injuries is there much possibility to return to performance or do these generally result in permanent disability? I know this is a crystal ball question - my apologies!

Yes these horses with sufficient rest do usually return to athletic function though the withers may have a misshapen appearance and require a specially made saddle.
