Discussion on Wound on geldings sheath?
Author Message

Posted on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 10:50 am:

I have just noticed today a small round hole type wound on my geldings sheath. It is only about 5mm accross but is leaking/dripping a almost clear liquid which if left goes a clear yellow and congeals. I cant think what this is unless it is an unknown insect bite, but seems a bit big for this. I have bathed it in saltwater and am leaving it to congeal for the moment as am confused as to what it can be. It being the weekend I am reluctant to bother my vet as I doubt it is important, but would be very interested to know if anyone else has had this problem and could throw any light on this?
Hope you hear from someone please

Dawn,

This could be nothing more than an infected bug bite or a scratch from him laying down, however it could be something more serious, like a broken open sarcoid. I would recommend having your vet out next week. It's probably not an emergency unless he is in pain, developes a fever or goes off his feed.

Good Luck

Heidi,
Thanks for replying. No he has no pain or fever and certainly has not stopped eating, so I will keep an eye out and stop worrying. Maybe see the vet next week. Dont think it can be a sarcoid as I have never seen a lump there.
Thanks

Dawn you do not provide enough information to access the seriousness of the wound. We do not know how deep it goes or whether there is a foreign body in it. It is dripping serum which suggests it may be deep and possibly prone to infection. Unless you can evaluate it as to whether it does not go through the skin or may have a foreign body in it you need to have it seen. The first sign of trouble would be pain and swelling around the wound.

Got any ticks around? That's a favorite spot. But for peace of mind, you just can't beat your vet's opinion.
