Dr. O and everyone.

I just read my post about this same problem in June 01. How Ironic. My horse popped a splint in the same spot as last time, front right leg. This time although its very obviously a splint. We did x-rays and there is no sign of a break or fracture (phew!). However, he's been lame for two weeks and we've been giving 2gms bute, 2X a day and wraping with poltice and DMSO, as well as cold hose. My vet wants to give the horse a cortisone shot. I've never heard of this, why would this help a splint?

A splint is usually the result of an inflammed periosteum, the cortisone will help relieve the inflammation. This may help the horse get well quicker though I do not standardly use the practice. See the article for our recommendations.
