  Discussion on Pigeon Fever question
Author Message

One of my horses was just diagnosed with Pigeon Fever. We live in Colorado and there is a huge outbreak of it this year with the DrOught we are having. I know it is contagious to my other horses, but I forgot to ask the vet if it was contagious to humans, dogs, cats or cattle. Anyone know?

Though very rare Becky, Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, has been reported as a cause of lymphadenitis and one case of pneumonia in man. Considering the prevalence of the organism and the rarity I would presume that it requires either large contamination or immune suppression to become infected, but it is a warning to take care. I can find no cases in dogs or cats.

Cattle and goats both can contract this disease though there is discussion about whether the types found in ruminants is the same as that found in equines and what the cross infection chances are.
