Hi everyone:
I have a 4yo standardbred mare that the Vet has declared has front leg bruising in knee bones. She had recently started fast work. The Vet is confident that with 6 months rest her knees will further develop and she will be fine. She had no heat in her knees. What is the best care to encourage this growth and development. Is it just rest or can we provide her with something that will help further.

These bones are pretty much done growing by 4 however they constantly remodel in response to work load. The trick is to get the knees to remodel without breaking down. The 6 months rest may be needed if the bones are excessively traumatized but once back exercise designed to strengthen the bones without breaking them down should be instituted for more on bone remodeling and training see, Training & Conditioning Horses » Musculoskeletal Conditioning » Exercise Physiology and Conditioning.
