Hi Dr. O.. my mare has come in from pasture with two swellings on the inside of her cannon bone, one on each leg just below her knee, each in the exact same place on both front legs. The bumps are hard, don't seem to be causing her pain, and she doesn't appear lame. She was worked pretty regularly up until about six weeks ago, then she's been on vacation (new baby in the house). She's turned out during the night, in during the day - if these are splints, how did she get them, since she's had no work?! The ground's really hard, could she get them from stomping at flies (although she's not out long enough when the flies are up to do that kind of damage ...). Help!

Hello Susan,
There are normally bumps in this position and they are the heads of the splint bones. Whether yours are abnormal or not I am afraid I cannot tell from here. Young horses have developed splints simply from running around on very hard ground but it would be a little unusual for two to develop at the exact same time and same place which is what makes me think you may just be noticing the heads of the splints for the first time.
