I have a mare that will have coughing episodes when I am riding her at a canter. Usually it's just once or twice after a minte or so of cantering and then she's OK. I try to gradually build up her endurance during riding season (spring through late fall)and she seems to improve. After she's in shape, she may have a coughing fit or two and then it seems as if she's cleared everything out and is OK.

A cough on begining exercise is a common event with many horses and not neccesarily the harbinger of heaves. It may be an indication however you need to check the air quality the horse is exposed to while stalled, for more see » Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Chronic Cough Without Fever
