Are pasture mates suseptible to infectious pneumonia? What measures should be taken so more horses in the heard do not contract the inf. pneumonia?

Hello Leatha,
Which infectious pneumonia are we talking about? Pneumonia in horses can be caused by a number of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and even some helminths, all with different patterns of contagion.

In general horses with fever or other signs of infection should be seperated from the herd. Though in some cases they may not be contagious (opportunistic organisms praying on a weakened individual) and in some cases this does not prevent exposure to the others (roundworms and rhodococcus in foals). You can learn more about these differentials at » Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Pneumonia & Pleuropneumonia.
