Is it possible that a stallion would settle mares through natural cover but fails to do so when collected and the mares inseminated artificially. Is there semen that is not collectible. Thanks

There are some stallions whose semen can't be used AI, especially if the semen is frozen. However if there is a problem it is more probable that the collection wasn't done correctly, the semen not handled correctly, or the mare wasn't ovulating or breedable for some other reason.

Was the AI done immediately and on site? Was it cooled and shipped semen? Was the semen treated with anything like an extender or antibiotic before it was shipped or used on site? Was it checked for motility upon collection and before being used? If it was cooled semen, how was it warmed before use? Was the mare ultra-sounded before the AI? Was she bred AI right before ovulation? Right after? Both?

Hello Omar,
Sara does a good job of pointing out the limitations to your question: it all depends on the particulars.

Some stallions do not collect well (low sperm count), cool and ship well (high mortality), freeze well (high mortality), etc... But if you can find out why and the problem correctable the stallion can be used. In general properly collected semen with good numbers, morphology, and motility that is immediately inseminated into a mare is about as good as natural cover and in some situations where the mare has problems with post breeding inflammation even better.
