Dr. Oglesby:
I have searched for more information on this new disease. We have had a foal born out of our stallion two weeks early. The vets are still not sure exactly what is wrong with this foal, the original diagnosis was possible dummy foal, but now there has been mention of GBED. We have never had any problems with foals out of our stallion similar to this. Ofcourse we are worried, because they are calling this similar to HYPP. Our stallion is a linebred Skipper W. Please give us any more info that you can find on this subject as we are concerned about our breeding program. I have breed Skipper W mares to this stallion and not had any problems. The dam of this foal does not go back to Skipper W. Is there any information on which lineage this GBED seems to be linked to?

I presume you have read the article on GBED Lisa? This represents the latest news from the primary researcher on this disease given at a conference 3 months ago. They still are not comfortable releasing the lines that they may suspect are carrying this defect or even if they have such a line picked out.

Thanks Dr. O:
I will keep watch for further info releases. And will keep you updated as to further info from the attending vets on this situation. Your article was very informative, infact, the vet gave the foals owner a copy of your article.

Dr. O:
Just wanted to you to know that the foal I contacted you about is fine now...after seeing the foaling video it was apparant that the foal was a dummy foal...the mare had a very difficult time, the foal was stuck, etc. I don't think the attending vet realized just how traumatic this birth was.
Thanks for you help on this.
