Two days ago my horse presented with a 105.1 degree fever, slightly diminished appetite but still eating, and extremely sleepy. Gums were pink, eyes were clear, hydration pinch test showed fine, but temp was 105.1. The vet came out and gave him aspirin, bute, and an antihistamine as well as tubing him to get electrolytes and water in him. Blood tests showed a normal white blood count, low red blood count and a small amount of toxin. The vet felt it was best to give supportive care and see if he could fight of the bacteria himself. Things seemed fine for a day then his fever spiked again on the evening of the second day; back up to 104. The vet came back out and he's now on an antibiotic and bute. My question is this, should I not have started him on the antibiotics and how high in high (i.e. when does the fever get really dangerous)?

Thanks,
Chris
