One of my donkeys has patches of hair missing all over her head. The vet says it's a reaction to insect bites and ruled out lice. We have few bugs out as it's still cool, but it is tick season. I pulled several ticks off of this donkey last weekend. I already have several products to treat the actual irritations as most of my donkeys are sensitive to bug bites though they are normally affected on the legs. The vet put some insect repellant along the donkey's topline to see if that would help as we're not sure what bug is causing the problem. This is a product for dogs containing 45% Permethrin called Kiltix and is made by Bayer. I gather that this was designed to prevent fleas in dogs without having to apply it daily. Does anyone have any information on this product? Is it effective in equines? The label says not to use it on cats.

The cloesest thing we have experience with would be the product released a year or two ago for horses (there are now a half dozen) called Freedom Spot on. This products run 45 to 65% permethrin, so this should be safe. Some have had problems with skin irritation or when applied to areas the horse can lick, run a search on Freedom for more.
