I cannot find a label for Russian thistle (Salsola spp). You might double check your concentration and application rates and if OK try one of the combination products like Crossbow.

I'm sorry I just know this flat, thick thistle as "russian thistle". once it 'takes hold' here in Wisconsin it is hard to get rid of. Crossbow, what type of chemical is that???? dont think i've heard of that??? I brother in law has offered Round-up, but I don't want to kill grass and everything! Help is appreciated. Thank you, Sheri

First check with your local extension to be sure what you call Russian thistle is the same that everyone else does. To learn more about Crossbow and many other herbicides see he article, Care for Horses » Pastures, Fences, & Buildings » Managing Pastures. There is a link in the article to a very good article on herbicides, AGR-172 Weed Management in Grass Pastures, Hayfields, and Fencerows.

We are also beginning to see thistle in our area (northwest Tn.) however I am not sure it is the russian variety you speak of. I feed thistle to my Goldfinches but the product says it is not the same as the one that are giving the trouble. I wonder if anyone has ever checked this out to verify their claim. We use Crossbow here in lieu of 2/4/d for the really tough plants we are trying to control. You might check with your county agent to determine the proper time to apply the product as it does vary based on the plant.

Rhank you Dr. O and kari, I appreciate the advice. I have sprayed a second time with 2/4/d and it MIGHT be making a 'dent' but I'm interested in eradicating it. I will check with the extension agents from the university as to the proper name and possible courses of action then I'll report back OK? thanks again, Sheri

Please do, common names can be so confusing. Let us know what they say.

The U of Wi. extension agent I spoke with called it a 'bull thistle', is that a common name? He suggested a "Weedmaster" or even "trimec" from a farm store. I found, however, the area stores here only deal in 'lawn size' portions, but I plan to do some serious purchasing if the 'trial' sizes really work.
