DrO,

A vet recently told me that when a patella locks, it is painful to the horse. He also said that each time it locks, it stretches ligaments, which is a bad thing. If this is true, under what conditions would you continue conditioning rides on a horse with an intermittent problem with locking patella.

Also, is there any new information on the promising new treatment (ligament splitting) discussed in the sidebar of your article?

Thanks!

I see horses with intermittent patella lock or was stuck but attended to rapidly that did not suffer any following lameness problem. It would surprise me if there were not some pain involved but most horses do not give evidence of it nor suffer a permanant disability. I think an occasional brief or transiet lock up during a ride is OK but if a horse locked badly and then stumbled he could do real damage to the stifle.

I am afraid just what is in the article is all we have seen.
