I have a four month old filly that has just started with a cough and thick yellow discharge from the nose. The filly has been sold and the buyer wants me to wean her as soon as possible. At what point would it be safe to wean her? Also, should I delay her first round of vaccinations (West Nile and EWT)?

P.S. The local vet said he didn't need to look at her and that I should start her on SMZ.

Scott, based on my experience, the filly can be weaned at anytime now, however, I normally wait until they are six months. Dr. O will have to answer your question about the cough and yellow discharge.

Hello Scott,
I would wait to vaccinate for any disease until she is well. Does she have a fever Scott? I have to admit I like to see foals that are sick before putting them on antibiotics and I would also make the decision to wean while sick based on that exam.
