Dr O this is the second time my horse has a hematoma just behind his girth under his belly. Its quiet large. Open hand size. He had the same thing when he was about 6 years old. I pretty sure its not from a kick as he had it in the exact same place about 3 years ago. And its under his belly not a likly place to be kicked. What things would cause this. I would be more worried if it spread down his leg etc. I am not too worried I am just confused as to why he would get it in the exact same spot a second time. Any thoughts on this, My vet was out for spring shots and saw it, I unfortuntaly did not think to tell her of his previous one. She had said if it had spread she would have thought of something with his heart, but did not think so. she thought it was his first. What do you think? It looks like a big growth under his stomach on the right. Like I said I dont think its from a kick. Thoughts?

Katrina, if it is a hematoma this is likely to be kick even if in the same spot and the fact it has been 3 years since the last incident more supports a kick than some chronic disease process with 3 years between a recurrent symptom. The swelling itself is not diagnostic on an insidious process until you start with a good physical exam, ultrasound of the swelling, and laboratory work.

If you are interested in diagnosing swellings see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.

Thanks Dr o I will look at the articles. My vet said it was a hematoma probably from a kick. I just wanted to double check with you. Thanks
