Dr. O

I contacted you a few months ago on our 3 year old gelding that has the atrophy in the shoulder, "shoulder sweeny". He has been stalled since 4/12 is in good spirits is putting on weight and adjusting to stall life just fine. I sent a video to UC Davis and I was told that he did not have the "gate" of a sweeny horse. What else could cause this atrophy? Our two local veterinarians called it shoulder sweeny because of the atrophy, they have NOT watched how he walks. What do you recommend? I also called Washington State, Pulman and the Dr. there said what I described regarding him not having a loose shoulder or popping in the shoulder indicated to him that it was not the typical shoulder sweeny.

As long as Spec's spirits are good we are ok with him inside, but what to do for him?? We are into this 4 months as he had a mild lameness on 3/12/03.

Hello Linda,
I would contact the folks who saw the tape and ask them, “what does his gait look like?” From there you can proceed. I have seen several Sweeny’s that did not pop. By itself I do not think it is a way to rule out for traumatic disruption of the nerves to the spinatus muscles.
