Dr. O., when the lower joint space of the hock fuses, does this happen in any particular way? My geldings lower joint is fusing in the middle front of the joint. Does fusion happen from front to back, or any particular way? With this fusion in the middle is this a normal process or is this something that may not fuse all of the way through? He has a significant amount happening in the left hock, just a touch in the right. Spurs in both. Thanks, may be a silly question! Cathy

Though particular causes of arthritis may have typical lesion sites, there are many causes each with a different appearance. I don't think we can predict whether fusion will occur and how quickly by evaluation of a single radiograph. Sequential radiographs taken over time might help demonstrate the rate of ankylosis.

Thanks for your quick response, Dr. O.! Radiographs were taken each year over the last 3 years and the first set in 2001 showed no fusion but spurring, set taken in 2002 showed some narrowing of joint space and last set taken in May of 2003 showed middle section in the front portion of lower joint fusing. I guess my question is do hocks fuse from the middle out or from one side to the other, or just however they decide to fuse? Thanks again!

As stated in my previous post, it depends on the reason she is fusing Cathy. Perhaps you are not clear that fusing is the result of arthritis.
