My 11 year old mare has her hock motion jerky after she is ridden for about 15 minutes. The stride seems to be full but the motion starts out and about half way thru there seems to be a hesitation and jerk. She does it more severely when gating at a fast pace. She is Peruvian so that pace is a Sobriandondo (sp). Her left is worse than her right, but at speed she does it on both legs. At a walk you can rarely see it. Is the problem in the hock or the stifle? When I put my hand on her stifle I feel a quick movement of a tendon or ligament sliding off of something. I do not know if that is normal or abmormal. Please advise with your thoughts. thanks, Dale Milligan

Without seeing it Dale, it is hard to judge. Your description sounds more like upward fixation of the patella: a stifle problem. See » Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Diseases of the Stifle » Stifle Lock: Upward Fixation of the Patella which describes this problem. You should get someone who is use to looking a Pasos for lameness diagnosis, P. Pasos are very prone to hind limb suspensory problems and bilateral lameness behind can present oddly.

Thank you Dr. O. I will go see a vet. for further diagnosis. Stifle lock seems probable.
