Hi, Dr.O, I was wondering what could cause a horse to land toe first other than navicular or heel pain. This is just a curiosity question as I have noticed that horses trimmed by a certain farrier land with their toe digging in first any ideas what would cause this? I have read that toe landing first is incorrect is that right? Thanks for any insight

Leaving the toe long strikes me as the most likely reason for a horse that seems to strike the toe excessively when putting the foot down. However this is not how I would judge toe length. It should be judged by all the considerations in the article we have on proper trimming. If I saw a sound horse doing this I would review the overall foot length and a-p balance.
