A few weeks ago I was pleased to report that my 7 yr olds hock problems had resolved through fusing. The vet has now noted luxation of the patella on the leg which had the worst hock and advised exercise to muscle her up and tighten the ligaments. She has very little muscle over rump and at top of legs. At this time she was riding and looking sound however the vet noted her lifting her left hind away from her body when shifting wieght (difficult to describe but not normal). I have been working as told however she is becoming odder with the left hind at times not coming further forward than directly under stifle. This is particularly noted in sand, between gaits and on corners to left but she is sound looking on straight lines and on concrete. I spoke over phone with vet who advised keep working but this is difficult when she looks so uncomfortable. My question sounds daft but will she be worse before she is better, ie. as things tighten does it become more difficult for her to move properly until they are tight enough to hold everything in place or should I load her up and take her back for further exam. The poor horse has been through alot. Thanks

As long as their is no overt catching and hanging as described in the article I do not see a need for further diagnostic pursuit of this until your vets recommendations are not successful in improving the condition. This is assuming the diagnosis is correct.
