I'll try to keep this short - last night, my mare (who is 6 months pregnant) came up lame. She was lying in her paddock (which she never does) and when she got up, I noticed that she was favoring her right front leg. I haltered her and brought her out in the aisle - she was severely limping the whole way out. Her lower leg felt and looked a bit swollen so we put linament on her front legs, wrapped both with pillow wraps and polos and sent her to bed with bute. This a.m. she seems to be a bit better but still favoring her leg. One of our boarders (who knows horses) thinks it might be an abcess. What do you think? Not sure if this is enough info to make a determination....If it is an abcess - what is the best way to treat that and if not, what other type of treatment would you recommend? Thanks!

Hello Julie,
I think it would be prudent to have a vet out to look at your mare in foal ASAP. She may be laminitic/foundering. This is just a wild guess from your description but I wouldn't wait and see. Check her over for any puncture wounds or something in the bottom of her foot. Call your vet NOW!

Lameness and swelling in the lower leg could be many things. Certainly this describes an abscess but also other more serious conditions. For more information about abscesses see Equine Diseases Lameness Diseases of the Hoof Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels.
