Dear Dr. O

I have been treating horses with the first onset of symptoms for strangles with pen. G. Their symptoms are clearing up within 48 hours. My question is how long are these horses on antibiotic treatment contagious? I know it is hard to culture the strep once treatments have started but didn't know if they can still pass the bugs on once the symptoms are gone.what are your thought on this.

There are no studies on this but with addequate amounts of penicillin they may be non-contagious once all clinical signs are resolved. However I recommend you keep them isolated for 2 weeks following cessation of treatment.
