Good afternoon,
I am a little worried, I have a 13 YO TB mare who yesterday got a bloody nose when I was riding in the arena. It was about 78 degrees outside, in the early evening. She was very excited because she is terribly herd bound and didn't like to be separated at all so she was yelling and getting herself all worked up. She hasn't been ridden in about 9 months but I did lunge her for about 10 minutes beforehand. We didn't canter or anything, basically she was jigging and spinning and well, being a stinker. When I took her bridle off her left nostril was dripping blood. The whole ride was approximately 10-15 minutes so it had to be in that time it started. It stopped pretty fast so that was a relief. What on earth would cause that? Do you think it was because she had gotten herself so worked up or maybe blood pressure or something? Thank you for your help.

Hello Patricia,
Unfortunately we are unable to know why your horses nose was bleeding but we have an explanation of the possibilities and how to diagnose the cause at Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Nose Bleeds: Epistaxis.
