I recently purchased a coming 2y.o. 1/2 Andalusian filly (gray of course). I checked her genitalia and anal area closely but missed, as did the pre-purchase vet, a melanoma under her dock. It is gray/black, kind of shiny and measures 27 x 7 x 3mm. It is very high on her dock and I found it first by feel.
Anyway, I read the study on this site that recommended removing solitary tumors. At this point I have measured it and am watching it as it is quite flat and not impinging on any vital areas. I am hesitant to remove it if it does not change for fear of activating the process further.
I've only had her for 5 weeks so as of now, it doesn't seem to be growing although that is not a very significant time frame.
I plan to get her to the vet to confirm my suspicion in the next month or two as soon as we've had a bit more time for ground work and trailer loading. Has any one else dealt with melanomas in a horse this young?
Thanks, Susan
P.S. sorry for the bad spelling but melanomx is not a new disease

Susan in the scientific report section of the article on Melanomas, a report on 18 young horses with melanomas is presented which should give you a good idea of what to expect, though your case has some unique features.

Just thought I would give an update. The melanoma remained fairly unchanged until into July and August where friction from the tail swishing that comes with fly season caused some enlargement and ulceration. So, in September, I had it removed and so far, no signs of recurrence whatsoever.
Hopefully it will stay that way for years to come.

Thanks for the update and I will keep my fingers crossed.
