Hi all
My 22 year old Welsh Cob mare has a nodule just inside her vulva. It was poking out yesterday but I'd never seen it before so don't know how long it's been there. It is about 1cm x 1.5cm, submucosal, smooth, solid and well encapsulated but not mobile. It doesn't seem tender at all, but I'm concerned it may ulcerate if it keeps coming out. It fits the description for a sarcoid, but I don't know if they are found in mucosa or just in normal skin. Does anyone have any ideas please?
Thanks, Kate

Hello Kate,
No it does not sound like a sarcoid since it is not on the surface but under the mucosa but there are no typical lumps in this area with the exception of melanomas in grey horses. I would consider having it removed but if it does not seem inflamed (red and painful) and is not changing quickly it is not likely to be something that needs to be hurried.

Thanks Dr O. I'll ask my vet about it next time I see her, but she is reluctant to sedate the mare because she has seizures when she's stressed, so removing it could be a bit tricky!
