Good Morning. Found my young walker limping badly into the barn this AM. Closer examination found his left front shoe had come partilally off, slid sideways and the clip had buried itself into the sole. There is also a nail hole in the sole as well. I removed the shoe and soaked the foot and put betadine on it. Wrapped in duct tape and he is now standing in the barn on rubber mats. STill very sore/lame - but willing to put some weight on the foot.

I guess my real worry is whether he did something else as well. I thought once I removed the shoe the lameness would resolve itself. SInce he is still reluctant to put weight on it I WORRY!

Hello Shari,
It would be unusual for a horse that has stepped on a clip and a nail to be sound instantly after removal of the offending shoe because it usually penetrates the sole down to the corium lacerating the corium and setting up poorly draining infection, see article on Hoof Abscesses for diagnosis and treatment. That said it will take a examination of the horse to really determine the cause of your horses lameness.

If the penetrated areas of the sole are not draining well it may need to be opened up a bit.

Thank you. He is still pretty lame this morning. There is no drainage that I can see. I will call my vet and have her come and take a look. I appreciate your input very very much.
