Hi, Dr. O,

I have a gray Arabian mare who had a small spot last summer on her back just above her hips. It was itchy and the hair was falling out. To her great appreciation, I bathed her and really concentrated high pressure water on the spot for 5 minutes or so. After that, it just seemed to go away. No hair loss or continued itching. (She had been contorting herself to scratch the spot on a fence rail.)

This year, she's shedding her winter coat and she has a large patch, about the size of an English saddle, on her backbone and starting down her sides. There's tiny black specks, like dirt, but not really, and when I brush her, her hair falls out much more noticeably than anywhere else. To boot, there's an odd smell associated just in this patch. She smells just like a horse everywhere else, but this patch smells just like "stinky ears" in a dog, maybe kind of yeasty.

Any ideas? Just on a hunch, after I brushed her and removed the loose hair, I used a 50/50 bleach and water solution on her, which she seemed to get some relief from. At the rate she's going, she'll soon be bald, so I am hoping to get some ideas before resorting to more vet bills. Vaccines and floating teeth were all last month, so I'm trying to budget a bit on this one.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

Kind regards,
Diane

The odor does suggest infection, the question is whether bacterial or fungal. Either way however the recommendations in the article on rain rot will probably be effective.
