Hello Dr. O,
I'm looking for my next dressage horse and my top prospect recently got kicked in the hock. She had a puncture from the kick, which developed a sequestrum. The sequestrum was orthsocopically removed and she is now on stall rest. According to the surgeon, the radiographs look very good.

I'm wondering, given the importance of the hocks in dressage, if I should cross her off my list of prospects. I'm not familiar with this sort of injury and don't have any idea what a long-term prognosis would be or if it would relate to the precise location, size of the sequestrum, or quality of healing.

Thank you...

Hello Mary,
Unfortunately there is not enough information in your post to decide. IF the joint capsule was entered or even badly damaged there is a good chance arthritis will result from such a event and may take a while to become radiographically evident.
