DrO, I have a foal who is now 2 1/2 months old. I just noticed that he has an extra piece of skin on his penis. The skin goes from the rim of the head of the penis to further up the shaft. It is only connected on each end. He cannot DrOp all the way and the skin causes his penis to curve backwards a little. I have had two vet opinions on what to do with him. One surgeon recommends surgery to remove the skin (for $500). The other surgeon said this resolves itself in 90% of the cases. What do you think? Thanks. ~Barbara WARNING: Below are some pics....

Hmmm, it looks pretty healthy to me and I do not expect this to "self resolve". What I cannot figure is the 500 dollar extimate. It looks like when he is down for the castration you snip the piece of skin at both ends and let it heal, I am not sure I would charge more than a few dollars for such a procedure. If when you snip you create a full skin thickness wound a stitch could be entertained. Figure at worse extending the anesthesia a few minutes and a few sutures a hundred dollars should cover it easy. Maybe there is something I can't see? DrO

Hi DrO The first surgeon wanted to put him under general anesthesia. I guess that's why it would cost so much. Here is a better angle:

And now the update: The second surgeon was correct. The skin broke on it's own and all looks great! ~Barbara

Oddly enough, I have another foal this year by the same stallion out of a different mare, and he has the same issue. -B

At least you know what to do in 90% of the cases at least! DrO
