Dr. O.,
After having the vet out, Guinness has been tentatively diagnosed with a muscle pull. I didn't see any suggestions for rehab for that. Am I missing it, or is it missing? If it isn't there, what would you recommend? We are giving him two weeks off with bute AM and PM (we may increase to 2 bute PM, as his front feet have become more sore in the last few days), and a muscle relaxant. Then, reevaluate. If he is OK, start with 5 minutes walk, getting up to an hour in 5 minute increments. Then adding trot in 5 minute increments till we get to a good half hour trot, then canter in small increments. After he is sound with this, add in the higher level flat stuff like circles and transitions, then after a few weeks of that, jumping. All this is supposed to take 2 months.
Sound OK, or do you have a different suggestion?

Alicia, I was just searching for sprained muscle re-hab when I saw your post. I too was unable to find it after searching around, so I feel better that I'm not the only one.

DrO can you send us in the right direction?

Thanks,
Fran

Because of differences in function and severity of muscles damage it is hard to generalize a rehab program. The most common muscle traumatized would be the those of the posterior thigh and complications from improper healing common. We have an article on this and suggestions for prevention at Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Fibrotic or Ossifying Myopathy & Myositis.
