Dr. O.. i have a three year old mare that i brought home from 90 days training.. while at this barn, she got the barn cold that was going around.. she never had a fever or went off her feed.... but did have that nasty snotty nose, the one that is wiped all over the front legs and a wet cough... she had this for the rest of time there.. 2+ months.. .. she was still lightly worked daily.. there is no turn out to speak of there... some of the horses came down with pneumonia...

home now.. out 24/7 she still has a wet cough with exertion...no fever, good appetite., she will cough several times and be done with it... noticed today that her nose is very slightly crusty as well.. my question is .. how long can this 'wet' cough go on before i should be concerned.. ?? she is coughing 'stuff' up , should i put her on an expectorant? or ?

thanks as always Ann

Hello Ann,
I found you now, I posted yesterday but apparently the post is somewhere in cyberspace.

There is no time frame that helps differentiate a recovery from a complication. Instead what you are looking for is steady, if slow, improvement and that the horse continues to breath normally and feel well. I have seen horses (and my children) cough for 6 months following a respiratory tract infection. A way to cut short the noninfectious reactive air way disease is a course of corticosteroids. But this should be done following a good exam and possibly blood work and BAL to rule out complications, see Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Chronic Lower Airway Disease for more on this.

Thanks.. i have never had a horse with such a long drawn out cough.. she is not laboring to breath after a brief work out.. but will cough a few times to get rid of the loosened mucus..

i will keep a watchful eye on her.. any change in appetite or cough i will have the vet out to do the blood work etc..

AGAIN thanks.. Ann
