My vet told me that Ulcergard is the exact same thing as Gastrogard, but it's quite a bit cheaper. Is it true that it's exactly the same?

Welcome Leanore,
I have updated the treatment section of the gastric ulcer article to contain information on this product Leanore.

Leanore - UlcerGard is an FDA approved treatment for ulcers in horses. It's manufactured by AstraZeneca (a large pharmaceutical comp that was the original developer of Prilosec - the human version of omeprazole).

The reason it's cheaper (it's website states $9.50/tube) is because the primary ingredient (omeprazole) is off patent and can now be made generically. I believe your vet was giving you good information. You can google UlcerGard and find this same info. And save yourself some $$$.

Our Westfalen pony developed a low grade ulcer last year (doctors believe it may have been a result of the stress involved with shipping overseas). We initially treated with GastroGard and now I use UlcerGard as a preventative during competition/heavy training...Both are made by the same manufacturer (Merial). You need a prescription for GastroGard..UlcerGard can be purchased on-line without a script. At medi-vet.com the cost per tube is $31.89 (free shipping over $100). There are 4 doses to a tube. Hope this helps.

One should note that Ulcergard is not FDA approved for the treatment of ulcers, see the article I reference above for more on this.

Dr O -

I stand corrected - their website www.ulcergard.com states that it's FDA approved for the prevention of ulcers not the treatment. But don't you think it would have efficacy regarding treatment as well?

I did try to find a reference to ulcergard in the mentioned article but must not be looking in the right place. I'll keep searching...

I went and look and the old article was still in place, my apologies, I now have the new one uploaded and it addresses your question.
