I have two weanlings that have quarter-ize crusty scabs on their backs (toward the back). One has about three and the other only has one. I just assumed it was rain rot but it really doesn't look like the picture in the article.

Hello Scott,

I am going through something similar myself.
Perhaps you could share a little more information about:
Diet
How these horses are kept
Weather conditions
Grooming practices
Exposure to other horses
Any medications or vaccines
Other horses beating them up
Insect Bites

Are you able to get photos to post?

Could be something real simple that doesn't require a whole lot of treatment.

Get the vet involved if this seems to be getting worse.

Ringworm usually does not cause "crusts". Does the description of the scabs in the article fit what you are seeing?

No. They don't really look like anything that I have read about. I have had horses with rain scald and it doesn't look anything like the others. The spots are almost perfectly round and raised about 1/16 of an inch. They feel like scabs but are more greyish in color. They seem to be sore but I have not tried to pick them off.

There is no hair embedded in the scabs. One of them came off (I had put novacin on it a couple of days earlier)and it just looks like pinkish smooth skin underneath.

Sounds encouraging.
