Mid Oct 7 yr. old experienced endurance mare doing 100 mile ride presents with no gut sounds at 75 mile mark. Immediatley eats/drinks, sounds recover quickly, does not go back out. Mare in estrus, no prior history of poor gut sounds in training or competition. Weather change from rain to cold during last leg.

Three weeks later, at 6th mile of conditioning ride, mare weakens hind quarters, temp. 101.4, no gut sounds. Again recovers quickly, temp. normal and eating within 10 minutes. Windy day. Mare in estrus.

Three days subsequent, full blood panel taken pre and post exercise, all normal. Four days subsequent, mare completes a 50 mile ride, places well, vets out fine. Cold and windy, not in estrus.

Vet suggests fall cycling is "different", may have been a factor during 100 and training ride, have also heard of similar anectdotal evidence from other mare owners wherein fall cycle may have impacted horse's normal performance.

Is there any science suggesting early autumn cycle may contribute to what we experienced?

Thank you.
