We recently rescued 5 ponyskin foals from slaughter and opened a huge can of worms they came in with strangles but now are covered with huge crusty scabs all over their bodies mostly face, ears, neck and withers and it seems painfull I have been applying chlorex creme to the one filly and sent in scabs to the lab they came back saying ring worm but the visual presentation is the Dermatiphilus?
I thought that rinworm only presented with hair loss, not crusty scabs with some red spots underneath?
I don't know what to treat with being as the lab say one thing but I suspect the other.

I will try and take some pictures tonight. Could it possibly be both skin problems not just one?

Yes you can have both and fortunately chlorhexidine or povidone will treat both. You are correct that ringworm generally causes hair loss and irritation but scabbing is uncommon and usually represents a secondary allergic reaction to the ringworm organism. Do post some pictures of the skin and some of the removed scabs and I will be glad to comment.
