I have a 14 yr old standardbred mare who has severe locking up problems. I have been told by my vet she has a locking petella. Surgery has been recommended but I wish to avoid this if at all possible. I get worried when riding her because her right hind leg buckles and I worry she is going to fall. Does anyone have any suggetions to help us?

stehpanie,
we had a mare with the same problem about 3 years ago, our vet shot the stifle with a new drug worked marvously for us. she is a performance horse and we also did not want to cut her. i cannot at this time remember the name of the drug, but i know it worked very well on our mare and she was locked up most of the time. it was sad to see. if you want more info on it, email me at levanger@union-tel.com and i will call him and get you some info.
good luck.

jodeen,
HI! that info would be very helpful, thank you. It is sad and I have had her all her life. her mother had to have her stifle cut like so many other standardbreds. I am simply at a loss as to what to do.
