I recently moved my mare to a new barn, she settled in quickly, now there is a new farrier. He came out last Weds and took Jazz shoes off. When I came to see her, that night, I noticed how flat her foot was to the ground, I noticed she had her entire sole touching the ground and no hoof wall from the sides to the front were in contact with the ground. It seems there is no side support for her hooves. On Weds night she was walking a little cautiously, but by Sunday, she looked like any movement would just be so excruciatingly painful, it broke my heart. I buted her for three days. and now she seems to be walking OK.I met with an Holistic Farrier, who recommended trimming her feet again, with the toe coming all the way back to the sole line and she would take out the flares on the side of Jazz hoof, we would then use Easy boots to help her through the worst part and Bute her again. I am so confused and worried that Jazz will be in so much pain for another period of time, and that doing something as drastic as what is suggested, will make things worse. I really respect this farrier, and other horses she has worked with at the barn are sound. Please can someone give me some advice. P.S: Jazz had a foal in May this year, so her body and feet have gone through some changes. She also changed feed when moved to the new barn.

How sad for your Jazz - a good farier is worth their weight in gold.
I would run on Word of mouth in the barn see what others think. I use shoes most of the time
and when we dont in the winter i use the Eazy Boots. (ok Old Macs) I like them they do buffer the foot impact a lot.
Good luck - WORD OF MOUTH from people you trust and look at their horses too.

Hi, Deb, I have a Jazz too! I have to admit, that I would stick with the bute as needed, and give those feet some time to grow out if she is walking OK right now. If the shoes were just pulled a week ago, and she is barefoot now, I would hesitate to trim again so soon. With all the recent changes, give her a rest, don't ride and use boots,if needed, to rest her feet. Above all, don't get upset - it's hard to make good decisions in that state of mind.

Welcome Deborah,
Without looking at the feet it is impossible to help you with trimming advice other than that given already: find someone you can trust to trim your horse. If you would like to post some good images of the foot and soles we might be able to help more.

We do have information on taking care of horses with tender soles following trimming at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Problems Following Shoeing or Trimming. We also have information to educate you about proper trimming and shoeing at Horse Care » Hoof Care, Hoof Trimming, Shoeing Horses. By educating yourself you can learn to judge the trimming yourself.

Hi Deb I also have a Jazz. Just started barefoot AGAIN and it is going well. Dr.O and other members gave me very good advice when I posted pics. Educating yourself is key tho and Dr.O. has some great articles in here. There are also many posts from other members that had the same problem and what they did.

Good Luck with your horse

I am off to the barn tonight, I am going to take pictures, I will upload them tonight or tomorrow., The other farrier seems to want to act on this quickly, she mentioned it is best to get it done now, so the healing can begin. I am definitely not riding her, I will take her out tonight onto the sand and play with her a little, see how she feels. (She loves to do parelli) Thank you all for the comments, I understand that it is difficult to say without seeing the hooves, I will put them on here tonight.Thank you Dr O.

I Have really had a bust time of things lately, so sorry for the delay. I did have the farrier come out and do Jazz hooves. She spent 2 and a half hours teaching and explaining and showing me what she was doing, the why's and why not's. she fitted Jazz with 'Old Macs', I will get the before and after pics I PROMISE. You will see the difference. and honestly. SO far - So good. I have the befores, I am taking the afters today!
once again, thank you for your patience, life is hectic at the moment. Check back through the weekend.,
