I am sorry I posted my question at the end of someone elses discussion. So I am re asking my question properly. I have a 6 year old Anglo-Trakehner mare. She is bay. Each year when she sheds out she looks like she is molting and gets thinning spots. She is doing that now. My problem is that for the past month she has been losing pigment around her eyes. My vet looked at it and thought she was rubbing her eyes. I put eye ointment with antibiotics and steriods in it on for about 3 weeks with no change. The left eye is getting worse. Her eye is clear with no drainage. I wondered if she is either lacking something in her diet or getting too lmuch of something. I gave my vet a list of everything she is getting. My vet didn't really see a problem, but told me to cut down on the amount of supplement if I was worried. There is no change. Do you have any ideas of suggestions? Zippi

Sharyl,
I own a holsteiner Bay mare who also had hair loss just below both eyes. There were no scabs, drainage, or signs of rubbing.
I started her on two cups of flaxseed and within six weeks the color changed and hairgrowth returned. She has been on flaxseed for two years.
I and several trainers, and vets have no idea why the lack of pigment and hairloss. We had initially treated with ointments thinking it was a fungal infection.
I still don't know what caused the patches.
I feed the flaxseed ground by a coffeemill and sometimes cooked in water. It took about about three months for the patches to disappear.

Sharyl, could you get us a good picture of this? Make sure it is backlit with the sun behind your back when you take it.

Dr. O. Sorry it took me so long to get back. My computer wouldn't let me on the website. I will try to get a picture.
