Hi,
My gelding was finishing his pellets and my mare approached the bowl with her head low as if to share some. She had finished her food first. They are usually really good with each other, but today he struck at her, and his front hoof clipped her right above the eye. She jerked back and was bobbing her head side to side at first for a few seconds only. When I checked her she had a cut about an inch long about an inch above the eye. It was not very deep, and bled just a bit then stopped. We stayed for a bit longer, and she seemed fine. I am just curious if there is anything I should watch for. She is 21 years old. Thanks!

Hello Mary,
Because we cannot evaluate the seriousness of the wound without examining the horse if is difficult to make specific comments so the only complete answer is, "you should watch for anything that is different than normal". Certainly the wound has caused changes but do they worsen or improve? If you are uncertain whether you have a serious problem you should consult your veterinary.

We do have recommendations for wound care, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Wounds: First Aid Care and Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care. Both articles discuss complications of wounds.

Thanks so much for the response. I am so paranoid. I actually had bad dreams about the mare last night!! The mare is fine today. No swelling and the cut looks okay. Quite small. I was worried as it was a blow to her head and close to her eye. The couple that own the facility are keeping their eye on her, but I will go visit her tomorrow as well just for my own piece of mind. Thanks again for the input.
