Hi-
Last night at a roping in our arena a 22 year old horse- fit and in shape used often-----dies. He came out of the box- stumbled and fell- his front feet ran in place for a few minutes and then he lost control of his bladder and was gone- this all took about two minutes. I thought the horse had a heart attack but the owner thinks his heart exploded from his extensive use of bute in prior years. Not that an answer will fix anything- I would just like to know what your opinion is. Thanx so much!!!!!!

No this is untrue. For information on the effects of bute see Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals ยป Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) Phenylbutazone (Bute).

Dr O,
What about the heart attack theory? Maybe?

Susan,
That's terrible, did they have any testing ran afterwards to lead them to any answers? What type of activity was the horse involved in at the time? "Out of the box"? Racing? Roping?

It would be high on my list of possibilities CJ along with severe vascular accidents particularly in the brain.
