We have a 7 year old pregnant mare that has become very lame in her right hip. I thought at first it may have been just a stone bruise or that she was going to abcess out at the coronet band as we have had that to happen to some others but it has been going on now for a couple of weeks and she is not any better and from the hoof tester method her feet are o.k. She is about 10 months bred. She walks with a very slow and painful movement but stands with this hip DrOpped a little but palpation doesn't really reveal a specific area either. It is possible she could have been kicked by another mare but I don't see any visible sign of that either. To make it a little more interesting I have a friend I spoke with yesterday who has another mare that is almost identical to this one except his is worse than mine in the fact she will not put any weight on her right leg and has a lot of edema from not moving. I was wondering if it was possible that the foal was putting pressure on a nerve or was turned wrong that could be causing this and whether stall rest or movement would be best. As of right now we have started her on a gram of bute 2 times a day but still out in pasture. Kinda hoping when she has the foal everything would get back to normal.

Hello Brian,
I have never seen a report indicating fetal position as a cause of pregnancy. The nerves that supply the muscles of the leg do not travel in the abdominal cavity and so would not be directly accessible by the foal. For more on localizing and diagnosing lameness see, Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diagnosis of Lameness.
