Dr. O.,
I didn't find anything exactly like what I am seeing, so here is a new post.
My gelding has had a bare area on one part of his mane for a while. The area is about 1/2 inch wide and maybe 4 inches long. It is not bald, but the hair is very sparse there. It is where the mane meets the regular coat on the side away from where the mane falls about in the middle of the neck. I supose it could be sun burn, though he is black with only a white spot on his forehead. The skin does not look irritated at all, except that it is slightly dry as evidenced by some flaking. No pus or blood. It does look a little thicker than the surrounding area. He does not appear to scratch it, and it has been pretty much the same since it appeared. I thought it was from when I cut his braids out at his last show (long story on why that was done), but I realized the other day that it has been 1.5 years since that now, and the spot is still bare. I suppose it could also be from a long necked blanket he wore from time to time over the winter. If so, would I just apply neosporin or some such?
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks,
Alicia

Unless you have pipe fencing your horse could be rubbing on, my bet would be it's from the long neck blanket, especially if it fit a little snug. We had the same happen to one of our horses last year. I rubbed a little of one of the Mega-tek products for hair regrowth on the spot. Hair did grow back, but it took awhile.

Save your money guys, none of these things will speed recovery, as Sarah found it just will take awhile.

Dr O.,
I will try to get a picture so you can tell me what you think it is. If it is rubbing from the blanket, I will just keep it moist with neosporin, as I know that feels good to me when I have rough skin. I use the generic, so it is pretty cheap and a little goes a long way.
